Gearing Up For Camp

Gearing Up For Camp!
By Frank Brown Room 9

Less than a week now until our class gears up and heads for camp at
the Wairarapa Outdoor Pursuits camp area. Room 9 has been talking
about camp all week. Camp isn't the only thing our class has been
talking about this week, class speeches.

So far nearly our whole class
has done a speech, every single one on a different topic, from
speeches about Dodgeball to speeches about Minecraft! What crazy
speeches. Our class has been working on speeches for over 2 weeks,
what a great working class! Our "WALT" was to plan and write about a
formal speech.

Anyway, more about camp, on Monday morning our class
has to be at Wellington Train station by 7:40am! Isn't that an early
start! I wonder if everyone is going to be there on time. Sadly, not
everyone from our class can go to camp, we wish everyone in our class
could go, but that's just the way it is.Everyone is so excited about
camp, we can't wait! First we will be making our bivys to bivy at the camp ground then we will be going for a tramp up Mount Holdsworth , that's going to be hard work!

Poem by Lisa Rolinson. Chinese Cinderella An unloved girl is drifting away, While her family shouts "Hurray, Hurray!" She sits around and wonders what to do, While they blame her saying "Mum died because of you". Her step mother shows her nothing but hate, But Aunt Baba believes she'll be great, With a medal hanging around her neck, She goes to dinner acting her best, Attention is what she craves, But hate is all that Niang gave. Nai Nai's feet gave her great pain, She tossed and turned all night in vain, Her heart was going as fast as a car, It skipped a beat and she was gone by far. No one goes to pick her up from school, So she walks into a restaurant like a fool, Her Dad picks her up with dismay, And hands her a map so she knows the way. The family unites with a terrible fight, It truly was a terrible sight, SMACK! Little sister is crying now, How can Niang be so foul. Fourth brother and little sister eat a tonne, While she has just a sticky bun, Her and her siblings start to fight back, Only to find big sister stabbed their backs. Her new best friend gives her a present, As she takes it she feels pleasant, Quack! Quack! The tiny animal cries, The little duck was the apple of her eyes. Her family sits at the table, That was when things became unstable, The family dog catches the duck, By then it was too late and she was stuck. Big sisters wedding has come too fast, They hope this will be the first and last, Her jade necklace is safely away, But Niang finds out after a day. She went to a party on a day of no school, But they soon found out she had broken the home rule, She had to take on Niangs scold, After that her heart felt cold. She was shipped off to an unknown place, All of her memories she had to erase, She is back to square one without comfort, At her new school she feels discomfort. Aunt Reine saved her from depression, And she became her greatest possession, She treated her like one of her own, Even though she was not well known. She gets a call stating an emergency, A girl summons her with urgency, She finds out that her Ye Ye is dead, But she fights back her tears and bows her head. She was scared at the thought of meeting her father, She did not want to intrude or bother, But when he found out that she had won, He said it was a job well done. Her father lets her go to the U.K, She is overjoyed and shouts "Hurray!" Her dream had finally come true, Now she can do what she wants to. Before she leaves she gets a letter, From Aunt Baba (no one better!) She tells her mothers favourite story, All about a cinderellas glory.

Fun Run By Frank Brown

13 June 2012
WALT: Use interesting words in our writing

Tawa Intermediate Fun Run

On Wednesday the 13th of June we had our school fun run at Tawa Intermediate School. It was a five kilometer fun run which meant we had to run six laps around the top college field but we could run more laps if we wanted. My friend Daniel and I ran the fun run together. As our syndicate Tui is called, Daniel and I start off bursting with energy for our first lap.

This is Daniel and I

As we come to the end of our first lap Daniel and I are very happy to have finished our first lap.We knew that once we had finished our first lap that the amazing fun run was just getting started. As Daniel and I came to the hill I took a sip of my powerade and Daniel took a sip of his water. We felt an incredible energy rush pumping through our vaines as we had conquered the hill.

This is Nathan and I

We felt so bizarre to have finished our third lap, we were halfway there and we kept going.
Mine and Daniel’s aim was to get at least nine laps. When we finished our fourth lap we went to Miss Moran who congratulated both of us.We thanked her and carried on running. When Daniel and I passed Miss Christie we told her we were aiming for nine laps and she told us that someone had already finished their eighth lap.We were only just finishing our 5th lap.We knew we had to pick up the pace, we both took a drink then kept running.

                                                    This is Kolio and Ben

Our legs were killing us, we both wanted to stop we looked at each other then looked back at the track and kept on going.Daniel and I saw our friend Noah so all three of us ran together until the end.We came to the end of our ninth lap, we had done it, we had finished our 9 laps!

Bottle Cars

We are making some bottle cars in Room 9. We are using valves, coke bottles, paper mache and plastic wheels to create a running car, powered by pumping air into the coke bottle. When you release the cap, air bursts out, letting the car boost. Here are pictures of us making the cars.
Samarah attaching her axle to her bottle.
Elias' group, paper macheing their bottle

We are going to race them today. Good luck to everyone, and have a nice race!

democracy

school fun:

democracy by school fun

Democracy is an egalitarian form of government in which all the citizens of a nation together determine public policy, the laws and the actions of their state, requiring that all citizens (meeting certain qualifications) have an equal opportunity to express their opinion. In practise, "democracy" is the extent to which a given system approximates this ideal, and a given political system is referred to as "a democracy" if it allows a certain approximation to ideal democracy. Although no country has ever granted all its citizens (i.e. including minors) the vote, most countries today hold regular elections based on egalitarian principles, at least in theory.
The most common system that is deemed "democratic" in the modern world is parliamentary democracy in which the voting public takes part in elections and chooses politicians to represent them in a Legislative Assembly. The members of the assembly then make decisions with a majority vote. A purer form is direct democracy in which the voting public makes direct decisions or participates directly in the political process. Elements of direct democracy exist on a local level and on exceptions on national level in many countries, though these systems coexist with representative assemblies.
The term comes from the Greek word δημοκρατία (dēmokratía) "rule of the people",[which was coined from δῆμος (dēmos) "people" and κρατία (kratia) "rule", in the middle of the 5th-4th century BC to denote the political systems then existing in some Greek city-states, notably Athens following a popular uprising in 508 BC.[2] Other cultures since Greece have significantly contributed to the evolution of democracy such as Ancient Rome, Europe,] and North and South America. The concept of representative democracy arose largely from ideas and institutions that developed during the European Middle Ages and the Age of Enlightenment and in the American and French Revolutions.[5] The right to vote has been expanded in many jurisdictions over time from relatively narrow groups (such as wealthy men of a particular ethnic group), with New Zealand the first nation to grant universal suffrage for all its citizens in 1893.
Elements considered essential to democracy include freedom of political expression, freedom of speech, and freedom of the press, so that citizens are adequately informed and able to vote according to their own best interests as they see them. The term "democracy" is often used as shorthand for liberal democracy, which may include elements such as political pluralism; equality before the law; the right to petition elected officials for redress of grievances; due process; civil liberties; human rights; and elements of civil society outside the government.
Democracy is often confused with the republic form of government. In some definitions of "republic," a republic is a form of democracy. Other definitions make "republic" a separate, unrelated term.MOST OF WIKIPEDIA ARTICAL.NOT WORD FOR WORD.

Democracy by Ylai

Room 9:
In New Zealand we live in a Democracy. A democracy is a system of government which the people choose their Prime Minister by voting for them in elections.

In a democracy we have certain rights and responsibilities. Some of our rights are : we have the right to have shelter, food, clothing and Water. We have the right to go to school and study.

In New Zealand we have responsibilities. Some responsibilities are : to follow all laws the government makes. We have the responsibility to care for our community.

Also more of our rights and responsibilities are, to pay for our own stuff( eg. House, clothes, food etc.) We have the right to report any abuse or complaint to the government. We also have the right to have our privacy.

In New Zealand we live differently from other countries. We have our laws, rights and responsibiliities. We are responsible of what we act and do. Obeying the rules/laws are one of the reason we are a New Zealand citizen.

Citizenship

COPIED FROM WIKI:
Citizenship is the state of being a citizen of a particular social, political, national, or human resource community. The term describing all citizens as a whole is citizenry.
In law, citizenship denotes a link between an individual and a state. Under international law, citizenship is synonymous to nationality, although the two may have different meanings under national law. A person who does not have citizenship in any state is stateless.

worst volcano eruptions in history

The Worst Volcanic Eruptions in History Historical Events

The Worst Volcanic Eruptions in History

From the most recent, current volcanic eruptions to those of the past, this list has them all. With volcanic death tolls reaching tragic proportions, these are not only the worst volcanic eruptions environmentally, they're also the deadliest. World disasters such as these famous natural catastrophes can affect the world on a global scale and test the preparedness and relief our governments can provide. Luckily for the human race, none of these have been supervolcanoes. Such great disasters, despite the destruction and natural hazards that come along with them, can also bring forth examples of how big our hearts are as we as individuals provide aid alongside our countries.

    Mount Tambora

Mount Tambora The Worst Volcanic Eruptions in History Politics & History picture
The biggest volcanic eruption in human history occurred in 1815 on the Indonesian island of Sumbawa, leaving 100,000 dead. There was between six months and three years of steaming and small eruptions after the initial one. Because of the 400 million ton cloud of gas the volcano created, the earth began to cool and 1816 became known as "The Year Without Summer" because of the low temperatures, which killed crops and led to mass starvation.
  2. 2

    Krakatoa

Krakatoa The Worst Volcanic Eruptions in History Politics & History picture
The volcanic island, which is between the Indonesian islands Java and Sumatra, erupted in 1883 with a force 13,000 times that of the atomic bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima in 1945. Over 36,000 people died. The explosion holds the record for the loudest sound ever heard. The sound was hard over 3,000 miles away from its origin point. The eruption produced a 130 foot high tsunami, which destroyed villages and killed 90 percent of the total people who died in the disaster.
  3. 3

    Mount Vesuvius

Mount Vesuvius The Worst Volcanic Eruptions in History Politics & History picture
The famous Italian volcano, the only active one on the European continent, erupted in 79 AD, killing at least 16,000 people with suffocating ash and instantly decimating Pompei and Herculeneam. Excavations beginning in the 19th century have been uncovering the skeletal remains of the volcano's victims. The volcano has erupted 30 times since then and scientists predict that the next eruption will be terrible, endangering the lives of at least 600,000 Italians living within its red zone.

    Mount Pelée

Mount Pelée The Worst Volcanic Eruptions in History Politics & History picture
Mount Pelee is a volcano on Martinique, the Caribbean island which was colonized by the French. On May 2, 1902 the rivers in St. Pierre were filled with boulders and trees from the mountain and the air was contaminated with sulfur. The eruption produced a tsunami that flooded the city. One side of the volcano collapsed, releasing boiling water and mud into the sugar farms and burying people alive. The eruption is known as the deadliest in the 20th century, killing at least 29,000 people.

    Nevado del Ruiz

Nevado del Ruiz The Worst Volcanic Eruptions in History Politics & History picture
Recorded as the second deadliest volcanic eruption in the 20th century, the Nevado del Ruiz eruption, known as the Armero tragedy of 1985, killed at least 23,000. The Nevado del Ruiz is the northernmost volcano in the Andean Volcanic Belt, located in Tolima, Colombia. The eruption produced several lahars and one reached Armero, a little town located 70,000 kilometers from the summit of the volcano. The eruption was Colombia's worst natural disaster and is estimated to have cost $1 billion.
